They are quite a few infected Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2009 8.0.0.357 setup files hanging around these days. When you install such version, your preferred anti-virus program starts itself spreading trojans ... which is not exactly what we expect from a security program. There is an easy way to verify your downloaded file is a proper and clean installer. Check this out !

- The infection

The infected setup file is called kav8.0.0.357en.exe (which is the official release name). However, it is a little larger in size (28,511,744 bytes instead of 28,402,176 bytes).

The setup file contains Trojan.Win32.Monder.gen which spreads from kav8.0.0.357en.exe/data0000.cab/is152564.exe/PE_Patch. The trojan its injected in the legitimate system processes EXPLORER.EXE to make its removal from an affected system difficult. It copies DLL's into C:\WINDOWS\system32\ and creates registry keys under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\

The trojan affects all Windows products.

- How to verify your download

Using the free utility MD5 Checker 2.31, you can easily verify you got an official setup file. This standalone utility can be used from any location, including portable drives.

Unrar the archive, run md5.exe and paste the MD5 Cheksum for the official KAV setup program in the upperfield. Checksum is B403FCFE3F402F5FAECCFD1C36450111
Then select your KAV setup file in the lower field, the program will automatically verify its checksum.
If you get a message 'The Codes Do Not Match', you probably got a fake setup file !
