I have a long time serarching for a dictionary as an alternative to google translate when my internet connexion comes down.
GoldenDict is the result that fit my ambitions. It permits me to have an offline dictionary Ar-En , En-Ar, En-En, Fr-Ar and whatever language and combination you want (Italian, German, Spanish…).
You can istall it from software repository in ubuntu or fedora by just writing goldendict in the search bar (In Ubuntu go to Applications>Ubuntu Software Center). After installation, go to Applications>Education>GoldenDict, that’s it!
Well, how we can add now other dictionaries?
Go here to know the supported dictionaries. If you choose for example Babylon and you selected this dictionary you should put the downloaded file in this directory /usr/share/goldendict-wordnet.
You should be logged on as a root (sudo su in Ubuntu and su in fedora):
#cp /home/master/Downloads/French_Arabic_dictionary.BGL /usr/share/goldendict-wordnet
Now, when you open GoldenDict, it will detect your new dictionary and add it in the above list. GoldenDict can also translate from online dictionaries and encyclopedias like Wikipedia. Enjoy!
