A senior government source in Nigeria has told the BBC that President Muhammadu Buhari’s chief of staff has tested positive for coronavirus.

There’s been no official comment.

Often described as President Buhari’s “right-hand man”, Abba Kyari is reportedly in his 70s.

He had visited Germany earlier this month with other Nigerian officials. Germany has reported 27,000 confirmed cases of Covid-19.

It is unclear whether Mr Kyari had self-isolated for 14 days when he returned to Nigeria.

But a senior government official did confirm he had tested positive.

A total of 16 governors were in direct contact with Mr Kyari at a meeting of the ruling party attended by the president and his deputy Yemi Osinbajo, who has gone into self isolation as a precaution.

It is believed Mr Kyari may have a complicated medical history.

Meanwhile, the presidency is currently functioning with a reduced staff and had announced the indefinite suspension of the weekly cabinet meeting to stop the spread of the virus.

It is unknown whether the president, who has undisclosed medical issues, has been tested for the virus or not, but it has led to speculation about his health.
