in the previous thread "importance of time" we tuckled the issue of time and how much it is precious and with your contributions a question came to my mind;did the habit of reading disappear

every person has his own way to spend his freetime;sport, music,movies,forums...and we must confess that only some of us who get tired of that than wait till the evening to tackle in and read a book; to relax, to learn something new or just to forget about the reality.

i know that we may face very busy days and that we have now hundreds of channels, satellites, internet but is this an excuse to stop reading, i dont think so and i dont think it's a matter of time because we have certainly a 15 or 20mn in bed before sleeping to read some pages of a book.

so what are these reasons that are keeping us away from reading ?????

i think one of the important reason
    is the big technology development

Many persons prefer to play with their PlayStation, surfing in the internet, chating, playing video games, watching TV

than reading books which becomes a boring activity comparing with the others

    unfortunately

Personally, I think that reading is a hobby more than a habit. I used o read some novels and plays when I was a student, but now, I don't read at all, simply because first I don't have much time second, because, I get fed up soon when reading. to answer your question, I think that the Internet and the media in general have supplanted the book.

yes that's true AYOUDA, reading is basicly a hobby but i think it can be a habit too, if you ask many people (especailly in western countries) about their hobbies they can tell you it's so and so however they have some time for reading every day

so AYOUDA, is there any chance that you start reading a short novel??? because honestly that was my 2nd step; to suggest that evrybody chose something to read (of course we will not control each other (simply because we cant :) )) and to start the challenge with the routine and the system that makes us like that

I do think that reading as a habit has nowadays been forlorn by lots of people. The book - no matter the type - has nearly lost the attraction & power it used to have. That's mainly due to technology & the complicated modern style of living. Look at schoolboys & schoolgirls. They aren't dazzled by books any more. All their interests seem to be focusing on playing different games, practising sports, and watching cartoons & series. I do always talk to my students & they tell me honestly what their interests are. Outside school, people in general seem to get far from the habit of reading. They always excel at finding excuses. They may tell you it's boring or they have little time. But they are great liars. They simply have no desire & no will. They have forsaken reading for ever. I'm totally sure of what I am saying.
Let me tell you something else. I visited England some years ago & I was really shocked at the sight of people's interest in the book. They read everywhere. In buses. In taxis. In public places. In parks. Even in pubs. And here it has been ages for me since I last saw someone holding a book. It's shameful. Really shameful.

    Thanks very much indeed, Forrest

exactly BRAVEXX, students and pupils can't endure anymore read a book but i can't blame them, i blame our government which doesnt make any effort to improve that, i mean every year they make a huge compain (TV,radio ,newspapers in the streets) at that period of 26-26 to encourage people to give money, why they cant do the same with reading and books, why they just keep silent and passive on that, i know it maybe an answer here (if you know what i mean) but it's too selfish and unresponsible

You mentioned western people, I want you to know that the book for westerners is more than printed pages telling some sort of stories. The book for them is a friend and a close friend too. A few years ago, I had a work experience where I had a contact with lots of French and German people and I've noticed how much they love reading.

Speaking about me, It seems that you want me to start reading:hi2:
I'm not sure I can do that because I have many things to do during the day next to running for my usual daily races
