    THE TEXT
- A thousand years ago, when mankind approached the end of the first millennium, some people feasted, some prayed, some people thought the world was coming to an end and the vast majority thought nothing of it at all because they had very little grasp of the calendar.
- Today, things are a bit different everywhere. Hotels around the globe have been fully booked for the “big night”; yes, of course it´ll be new year´s eve, 2000. You can almost hear the deafening pre-echo of what is called “Hoopla” to “End All Hooplas”.
- For the 20th century, which had began as the century of world wars and grew into the Atomic Era, seems to be ending today as the “Age and Era of Entertainment”. The 21st century will witness significant glories. Science and medicine, surely the two greatest success stories of the past 1àà years, are poised for fresh advances, exploring both the imaginable frontiers of the universe and the microscopic secrets of the human body.
- The potential computers to transform our work habits, our politics, and not least our shopping is only beginning to be anticipated. Americans will be, on average, a good deal older than the century ahead; perhaps age will replace race as the great dividing line in our society.
- International affairs, though speckled with trouble spots, have settled for the moment into what might be called a “Pax Economica”, as rich and poor nations alike are working together on the new liberation movement; the business of creating wealth. The portents of the future are not uniformly bright- they never are- but they do seem much more favorable now than at most stages of a century disfigured with blood and ruin. So, the world deserved to throw itself a party, to make little noise and to be of good cheer.
