    Hi, dear brethren !

As it is known, our English & French discussion forum is a precious and invaluable space where one learns and keeps learning around the clock. And for the sake of bettering our level in English & scrutinizing this marvellous and lovable language, I've thought about getting deeper into its realm to grasp as many meanings as possible & to widen our knowledge of it.

As the title of the thread indicates, we're gonna focus on idioms. These are defined as phrases whose meanings cannot be defined by their literal definition, but they refer instead to a figurative meaning that is known only through common use.

    *****

    Examples

You'll have to go through the proper channels

    =

You'll have to follow the correct, prescribed steps.

    *****

go to the heart of sth = hit, reach the central point of

We shall go to the heart of the problem.

    *****

bring forward = raise , propose for discussion

At the Council meeting, the Mayor brought forward the question of developing the city center.

    *****

    I'm waiting for your idioms

    Actions speak louder than words
This idiom means that what people actually do is more important than what they say- people can promise things but then fail to deliver.

A chain is no stronger than its weakest link

This means that processes, organisations, etc, are vulnerable because the weakest person or part can always damage or break them.

A fool and his money are soon parted

This idiom means that people who aren't careful with their money spend it quickly. 'A fool and his money are easily parted' is an alternative form of the idiom.

I do not know if I'm in the right direction in this topic or not

This is a famous phrase that made me laughing a lot when I started studying English at school

    It rains cats and dogs

It means raining heavily as it was yesterday in Tunis
